Love your dentist!
As I assume most of us do, I was killing a few moments the other day reading a blog. It was a dental forum. I was taken back by the vile attacks both dentist and patients were launching at each other! We have all heard the comments like, ” that no good greedy dentist” or that “ungratefully, rude patient”. I was disappointed to see just how unhappy some dentists are in their profession and how miserable and untrusting some dental patients have become.
After a minute or two thinking about what I read, I thought back to dental school. One of our professors make a statement, that seemed kind of crass at the time but, I have always remembered. He said, “Get used to seeing the backs of peoples heads as they are on their way to see someone else”. At the time I simply assumed he meant that there were people in the world that you could not make happy.
After 20 years in practice, I think I now have a much better understanding of what my dental school professor really meant. He was talking about trust and respect. If a doctor develops a relationship with their patients that is base in trust and respect both parties prosper.
When I think of my happiest times in dentistry, I picture people with whom I have a great relationship. That is the reason I truly love what I do. I am genuinely excited to see my patients and complete procedures for them.
I feel very fortunate to have learned this lesson early in my career and practice it to this day. This is why I am always happy to see you and hope you feel the same way towards me. Even If what I do may be expensive or uncomfortable!
